Newcastle warned against Jesse Lingard transfer from Manchester United

The 28-year-old Man United player's future has been a hot topic of conversation ahead of the January transfer window.

Former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique has insisted his former club must not prioritise the signing of Manchester United Jesse Lingard.

Enrique, who played 129 times for the Magpies believes his former employer should look to shore up their defence before they look to improve the attacking options available to current boss Eddie Howe.

Manchester United's scheduled match with Brentford did not take place last night as it was postponed due to a Covid-19 breakout within the club.

United closed first-team operations at their Carrington training complex for 24 hours on Monday after a number of players and staff returned positive lateral flow tests.

The Manchester Evening News is aware of at least four positive cases but the club has declined to specify how many players and members of staff have tested positive.

A new date for the match has not yet been confirmed and attention will now turn to whether Saturday's match with Brighton can go ahead.

Lingard, who has been constantly linked with a move away from Old Trafford, is about to enter the final six months of his contract, with West Ham interested in signing the United academy graduate.

But with the former Liverpool defender adamant Newcastle must prioritise elsewhere on the pitch, doubts could be cast regarding a potential move to Tyneside for Lingard.

“Lingard is a good player but I’m not sure he’s what Newcastle need. He could do well but it depends how much they want to spend,'' began Enrique as he spoke exclusively to Be My Bet.
