The signing of the Children's bill 2021 into law by President Uhuru Kenyatta is a big step in our country Kenya.
Yesterday, we were having a discussion with some friends on how the criminal justice has been harsh on the boychild especially when the case involves two minors of different genders. Say for instance a minor impregnates an underage girl, the boy usually carries more weight. In most cases, this makes men feel like the girlchild is being favored by the justice system. Will this law turn things around for the boychild or it will be business as usual? Time will tell.
One positive thing, however, is the fact that minors, be they female or male will not go through the emotionally tormenting court system when they are accused of committing minor offenses, whilst the age of criminal responsibility has been pushed to 12 years, from 8 years.
It is a win for our children as far as justice is concerned, and a win for parents who wish to do adoption. All we pray for is that the male species of homo sapiens "wise men" will not feel disfavored by the new law.
