Ammonium lauryl sulphate or ALS is a commonly used name for ammonium dodecyl sulphate. It is grouped as an alkyl sulphate and is also an anionic surfactant widely found in and body wash as a foaming agent. ALS has a pH slightly less than seven, making it mildly acidic. Ammonium lauryl sulphate is made up of a long nonpolar hydrocarbon chain with a polar sulphate end group. The combination makes the material a surfactant. These two components permit this chemical compound to be soluble in both polar and nonpolar molecules.
