Like a plague, every parent in the neighborhood prevented their kids from playing with her.
They feared her appearance might rub off on their kids.
They even threw mockery words at her parent, calling them names such as; parents of a witch,an ogbanje and so many other insulting names.
Nneka was a five years old girl, but she in no way looked her age.
She looked so scrawny and thin with long tiny legs that looked like they managed to carry her body while she walked.
She had a long oval face, long black hair, with bulgy eyes, pointed nose and small lips which was supposed to make her beautiful. But no! It didn't, because her eyes were a mixture of blue and green and her teeth were like vampires fangs.
She was always lonely and quiet, and some said they have seen her talking and laughing to herself.
She was the only child of her parent, the only surviving child though.
All three babies born after her were stillborns. Making tongues wag the more.
Every kids avoided her, well except my kids.
I had two daughters and a son,and my first daughter Kamsi was six.
I and my husband paid no heed to the talks from people about Nneka. I saw her appearance as normal and just a birth defect or something of such.
My kids were the only friend Nneka had,and she only smiles genuinely when with them because they made her feel loved.
Her parent were so grateful and happy that their daughter had become a bit jovial and lively.
Not until one day, Kamsi died! Yes she died.
We found her dead in the wardrobe of the kid's room, she was curled up like one who must have been frightened, her eyes wide open in horror and white. With blood trickling down her ears, nose and mouth.
Strange!
What happened to her was a mystery to all, except me.
I noticed prior to her death how she usually called Nneka in her sleep, Kamsi would wake up with a jerk whenever I enter their room to check on them, after a series of struggle and kicking. The name Nneka not leaving her mouth.
And as Kamsi's body was being taken away to the hospital, I saw little Nneka smile, her eyes turning red in a flash and back to normal.
My heart became troubled and I felt uncomfortable.
I started avoiding her from coming to play with my other two kids, giving her excuses from behind the door whenever she came.
Two months later,my husband traveled and I was left alone with the kids.
One night, after a stressful day at work,I prepared the kids and I for bed and we slept together in their room.
I was awoken in the middle of the night by sound of footsteps, when I opened my eyes everywhere was pitch black and I tried searching for my torch with my hands but it was nowhere to be found.
I heard sound of doors opening and closing and it continued coming closer, the footsteps also.
It was like a lady's, who had a stilleto shoe on because of the 'koi koi koi' sound it produced.
My throat suddenly became dried,my heart beating like a party drum.
I wrapped my arms around my two kids and curled up under the duvet.
I started hearing Kamsi's voice faintly.
"Leave me please...please...mummy!!" I covered my ears at the scream.
"Jesus Jesus Jesus" was the only thing my mouth could whisper.
I was dead scared and almost peeing on myself.
Suddenly the door to the kids room opened,I felt the footsteps enter the room.
The atmosphere was tense and choked up. Cold winds that made goosebumps fill my body began blowing.
I tried to get used to the darkness and at least see who it was but ny eyes seemed blind, seeing nothing but darkness.
I started feeling my second daughter Mma slip out of the bed.
"Mma!" I finally found my voice to call.
"Mummy!!" She yelped trying to grab me tight. She was awake now.
My hand hit something and I found out it was a torchlight. I picked it up and put it on.
"Haaaaaaaaa!!!!" A loud scream left my mouth at what I saw.
Nneka stood there, her eyes bloodshot and her body covered in blood especially her mouth which she licked.
She had a red heel shoe on and in her right hand was her parents head. Blood dripping down and flowing on the white tiles.
She continued drawing Mma closer,a wicked grin plastered on her face.
"Mummy!! Nneka!!" Mma kept screaming. I held my son tight and tried moving closer to grab my daughter's calling hands.
But in a split second Nneka dug her fangs into Mma's leg and bit off a large chunk of flesh.
She dropped her parents head on the floor and grabbed Mma with her both hands, devouring my daughter like an animal while she screamed in terror.
Soon she dropped dead with a thud, her eyes wide opened like Kamsi's when she died.
I was screaming and shouting my lungs out but my voice was not loud enough.
Nneka turned to me and with that same wicked grin she advanced towards me.
"Nooooo!!!" I screamed and jerked up from sleep panting heavily.
I was in the kids room and they were all asleep. Everywhere was drak, I quickly reached for my torch and put it on.
My breathe seized in fright, liquid trickled down my legs when I saw Nneka seating on the dresser chair staring at us.
