​​Why Eyeballs Don’t Freeze At Subzero Temperatures?

If our hands, toes, noses, and other body parts are susceptible to freezing and getting frostbitten, it might seem unusual that our eyeballs can survive the cold totally unprotected. But, unlike other bodily extremities, the eyes are constantly pumped with a strong supply of warm blood—even in the coldest situations. Furthermore, our eyes are nestled rather deeply in our heads where bone, tissue, and fat also help keep them warm. Essentially, it’s virtually impossible for the eyes to freeze as long as they are inside a warm, functioning body.

Although it seems to defy logic that the wet, soft tissue of the eye wouldn’t immediately freeze when the thermometer drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, in truth, the explanation is quite simple. Our eyes don’t ice over because they are almost entirely encased in our warm, well-regulated heads. They are positioned more than halfway inside our noggins and protected by insulating bone, muscle, fat, and eyelids.

Making the eye even less likely to freeze is the fact that it’s filled with numerous blood vessels which continually heat it up with the hot blood from our bodies. In fact, the primary blood source to the eye is the ophthalmic artery, which is a branch off the same, deep artery that supplies the brain. When in cold surroundings, the body diverts even more blood to the brain (and other vital organs) which, in turn, helps keep eyes even warmer.

With a history that traces back as far as the 18th century, the Lazy Susan has stood the test of time, essentially unchanged. Also called a turntable, the Lazy Susan is a round or tray-shaped platform, that rotates on a set of bearings, and sits on a table or countertop to easily distribute food.

Thomas Jefferson invented the Lazy Susan in the 18th century, though they were referred to as dumbwaiters at that time. Lazy Susans are typically made of wood or plastic but glass, marble, stainless steel, and wire may also be used. Types of Lazy Susans include D-Shaped, Round, and Kidney-Shaped.

Often used in upper and lower cabinets, the Lazy Susan also creates accessibility for storage in the kitchen. With a simple spin, everything on the tray or shelf is within reach.

TSMC talks to Germany about potential new chip plant

Apple chip partner TSMC is seeking to set up a new plant in Germany, with the chip foundry in talks with the government to set up yet another production facility.
TSMC is known to be a highly in-demand chip producer, one that works on Apple Silicon and other Apple chips, as well as for other vendors. As part of a series of construction projects to expand capacity, it seems that there are plans to do so in Europe as well.
A senior executive of the chip maker told Bloomberg on Saturday that TSMC is talking to the German government about possibly setting up a plant in the country. Comments from TSMC SVP of Europe and Asia Sales, Lora Ho, indicate the talks are underway.
The discussions follow after TSMC Chairman Mark Liu advised to shareholders in June that it had started to assess the possibility of a new facility in Germany.
TSMC has yet to make a decision, but Ho says a number of factors can apply, including government subsidies, demand, and the local talent pool. However, Ho admitted TSMC hasn't talked to Germany about any potential incentives, nor where such a plant could be built.
The move is one of a number of construction projects TSMC has underway to build up its capacity around the world. This includes a $7 billion semiconductor factory in Japan, as well as a $12 billion facility in Arizona set to start mass production in early 2024.
The talks occur ahead of the introduction of the European Chips Act, a strategy from the European Union arriving in early 2022 to help boost semiconductor production.

When you drink too much water, you may experience water poisoning, intoxication, or a disruption of brain function. This happens when there's too much water in the cells (including brain cells), causing them to swell. When the cells in the brain swell they cause pressure in the brain. You may start experiencing things like confusion, drowsiness, and headaches. If this pressure increases it could cause conditions like hypertension (High Blood Pressure) and bradycardia (Low Heart Rate).

Sodium is the electrolyte most affected by overhydration, leading to a condition called hyponatremia. Sodium is a crucial element that helps keep the balance of fluids in and out of cells. When its levels drop due to a high amount of water in the body, fluids get inside the cells. Then the cells swell, putting you at risk of having seizures, going into a coma, or even dying.

​​Why We Put Salt on Everything We Eat?

Salted food slowly became more common since it was always around and ready to eat, and eventually salted foods became so common that their taste was not just accepted, but expected. And why not? Salt makes food taste good.

Whatever you’re eating (hopefully) was or came from something that was alive at some point in time. Living things, so long as they come from this Earth, are largely made of water, which dilutes the taste of anything that you eat. It’s been proposed that adding salt to food enhances other flavours by trying down water molecules. Basically, salt might stop water molecules from diluting all the other flavors in your food.

So it’s the way that salt brings out other flavors that makes salty foods so satisfying, and it’s probably why your craving-fueled daydreams don’t have you downing salt straight from the shaker.

Besides concentrating other flavours in food, salt also decreases the bitterness that you’ll naturally find in foods. We’re surrounded by salt every meal of the day, so it’s easy to dismiss it as mundane, but between building early civilizations and boosting the flavors of our food, it’s safe to say that the salt shaker has earned its place at your table.

​​Why are Footballs made with a combination of Hexagons and Pentagon shapes?

Traditionally, footballs were made with a combination of hexagonal and pentagonal panels as they fit together like a puzzle to form a perfectly spherical shape which is why the hexagons and pentagons are equally important .

The stitched-football has 32 panels of leather or synthetic plastic tightly stitched together. 20 of these panels are hexagons and 12 of them are pentagons.

However, the modern day footballs are not stitched, they are thermally bonded. Thermally bonded footballs are different from their stitched counterparts in the way the panels are attached together. All of the panels are arranged inside a mold with adhesive applied to the edges of each panel. The mold is then heated and pressurized gluing all the panels together into a sphere.

This process is much less labor intensive than stitching the panels together. The first thermally bonded football was used in the 2004 European Championship.

There are few ways to get rid of Corns like Self-care measures include wearing properly fitting shoes and using protective pads. Medicated patches can help remove corns or a doctor can trim them. Medical procedure includes Removal of unhealthy tissue. There is also a device called Brace applied to body to help stabilise, protect or limit movement of a Corn.

​​Why do Mosquitoes bite some people and not others?

It has taken decades of research, but scientists are close to working out why mosquitoes bite some people, and not others.  It comes down to a complex trifecta of carbon dioxide, body temperature and body odour that makes some people more inviting to mozzies than others.

Mosquitoes first use carbon dioxide (CO2) to track their quarry, much like I use my well-honed sense of smell to track down a freshly baked apple pie. CO2 is emitted by its mammalian blood donor, which mosquitoes can detect from up to 50 metres away. They fly upstream using the shift in concentration of CO2 along this stream to orient themselves.

Subsequently people that emit higher levels of CO2 are more attractive from a distance such as those that are exercising or others that have a higher resting metabolism, such as larger individuals.

In general, this means men are more likely to attract mosquitoes than women, children are less susceptible than adults, and full-figured individuals including pregnant women are more attractive than their slimmer counterparts.

As mosquitoes get closer, thermal detectors that can clock temperature differences of around 2.5 degrees kick in and if the target is not at the right temperature, they won’t land. Anything over 40 degrees is getting too hot, but normal human body temperature is just right. The final stage is related to body odour which is where it starts to get complex but super cool.

​​What is in Contact Lens Solution?

Contact lens solution is designed to be used when rinsing, storing and cleaning your lenses. It works to kill bacteria and keep your contact lenses safe when they come into contact with your eyes. Solutions come in many different formulas, all aimed to accommodate slightly different needs, but essentially all do a very similar job.

There are 2 main types of solution used with soft contact lenses;
All in One solution or Multipurpose solution: rinse, clean and store your lenses with this solution and it is safe to come into direct contact with your eyes
Peroxide solution: lenses can be cleaned and store in this solution, however it must be neutralised before it comes into contact with your eyes.

To neutralise solution, either add a neutralising tablet to the solution while the lenses are being stored in their case, or the case itself will have a neutralising disc built into it. The neutralising process normally takes around 6 hours, and it is important you do not try to insert your lenses before the solution is fully neutralised. Some people chose to rinse their lenses in saline solution, however this is not a cleaner and should never be used as a substitute for an All in One or Peroxide solution.
