Dress Code:
Deciding what you’re going to wear to an interview is just as important and preparing answers for interview questions. Your clothing choice reflects how you present yourself and who you are. Dressing smart for an interview, even if it’s not your usual style, shows your interest in the company and overall professionalism.
The following article outlines several things to avoid when choosing your interview attire including:
- Wearing too much perfume or aftershave
- Casual clothing such as hoodies and tracksuit bottoms
- Revealing clothing
- Inappropriate footwear
Tips for women:
-Don’t overdo the jewellery – nothing too chunky or dangly. Also avoid anything that gives you the urge to fiddle with it.
- Keep the heels moderate (3 inches max) but avoid completely flat shoes unless you really need them.
- Be sure to coordinate – navy with navy suits, black with grey.
- No too much cleavage – it looks unprofessional.
- If you opt for a dress instead of a suit, it needs to be sleek, sculpted and mostly a solid dark colour.
Tips for men:
- Ties should be low key. This is no place for comedy or cartoon characters (unless you auditioning for such roles).
- Wear leather shoes and a matching belt.
- Go for a plain shirt in a traditional colour – white or pale blue. Beware of pink!
- Your suit needs to fit you well. Get yourself measured and fitted by a professional. If you’re on a budget, you can get some affordable official suit in the local market. You can also do mix and match, so shop around.

It all starts with first impressions. You can make a good one before you ever walk in the door by researching the company you’re applying to.
1. 𝑺𝒆𝒆𝒌 𝑰𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒚
A wealth of information is available online. Start with the business’s website and Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn pages. You should also sign up for company newsletters and emails and follow any influencers at the organization who can keep you up to date.
2. 𝑫𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚
Dress professionally and relative to the industry. (You can check my previous comprehensive post on dress code)
3. 𝑻𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝑶𝒇𝒇 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒆
To prepare for a job interview adequately, you must turn off your cell phone — or keep it silence. It’s too easy to reflexively reach for a phone that pings or vibrates.
4. 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕
Smile and greet everyone you meet politely, from the receptionist to the CEO; your behavior very well may be reported to the hiring manager, especially if it’s disrespectful.
5. 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒀𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔
Once you’ve done your research, study the job description and think about how your skills, knowledge and personality mesh with the duties the position requires.
6. 𝑨𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑬𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚
It’s a good idea to do a dry run of your trip to the interview site up to a week in advance, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area or exact location.
7. 𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝑺𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈
It’s the night before your moment of truth. You’ve done your research on how to prepare for a job interview. You’ve picked out the clothes you’ll wear. Your documents are packed. Now it’s time to relax.
