COMRADES’ LIFE AT CAMPUS PART1
Public universities and colleges' mess (restaurants) are the cheapest places that students can have meals. During my days back at Kabete National Polytechnic, one could have breakfast of 2 slices of bread and tea for ksh22, lunch of ugali mboga for another ksh 20 supper, one could have rice and beans for ksh 35 This totals up to ksh 77 per day. I do not know if the pricing still applies to date. The prices are subsidised by universities to ensure that no one sleeps hungry. DESPITE the friendly food prices , some students still cannot afford even a single meal. I was severally and randomly approached by some of my fellow students asking for 10 bob "nikule at least saa hii inisukume mpaka kesho", not knowing that also i was just a victim slept for a day or two on n empty stomach. It was quite heart-breaking for me. Hunger is a criminal. It robs one of sobriety, energy and drive to do anything meaningful. The hardships that some students go through are unimaginable. Some sleep in common rooms, some watch tvs in student centres » tops « till morning, others migrate from one friend's place to the other because they cannot afford rent. One may argue that there is HELB loan, but be informed that some families back at home rely on their son/daughter's HELB loan to pay fees for younger siblings and still feed families. The student then gets into dillemma of choosing between spending the few remaining coins on clothes or food. To a college/university student, a 50 shillings means everything. To all university and college students struggling financially, may God see you through. Life out here is not rosy either but we are praying for you. May God bless our pockets so that we can support you whenever possible.....
